Edward Hospital’s Kaplan Named to Board of American College of Physician Executives (ACPE)

Dr. Alan S. Kaplan, vice president and chief medical officer of Edward Hospital & Health Services, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE).

Dr. Kaplan is currently leading the development of Edward’s Plainfield campus, including the proposal to build a 142-bed Edward Plainfield hospital on that site.

Dr. Kaplan is also responsible for Information Systems Services, Materials Management, Dietary and Biomedical Engineering in addition to leading Edward’s efforts in the planning, adoption and management of medical technologies.

Dr. Kaplan has been with Edward more than 11 years. He began his career there as a practicing emergency physician and Medical Director of Edward’s emergency department, a Level II Trauma Center. Dr. Kaplan received a Master’s degree in Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 2000.

Edward Hospital Appoints New Vice President Medical Affairs

Hoda A. Asmar, M.D., has assumed the position of Edward Hospital’s vice president, medical affairs, effective this week, announced Alan Kaplan, M.D., vice president and chief medical officer. Dr. Asmar’s duties will include collaborating with the medical staff to put in place best practices for efficient, quality health care. To that end, she also will be working closely with hospital administrators and advanced practice nurses on a wide range of operational issues, including safety, quality, risk management, and development of patient care protocols. The hospital’s house officers will report to Dr. Asmar and she will have a non-voting seat at the Edward Medical Executive Committee.

Dr. Asmar’s previous positions included: Chief Medical Officer at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and Medical Center in Clinton Township, MI; Vice President of Medical Affairs and Medical Director of the hospitalist program, Mercy Hospital, Cadillac, MI; provisional medical director of the Public Health Department in District #10 in Michigan; and employed physician with Great Lakes Family Care, practicing infectious disease and internal medicine. She is board-certified in internal medicine, infectious disease and as a quality assurance and utilization review practitioner.

Dr. Asmar’s medical education includes a medical degree from St. Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon; internships in France; and residency at the Polyclinic Medical Center in Harrisburg, PA. She also completed a fellowship in infectious disease at Hahnemann University Hospitals in Philadelphia and a master’s in business administration at Michigan State University.

Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter Announces New Associate Medical Director

Dr. Thomas M. Vescio has joined Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter as Associate Medical Director. Dr. Vescio comes to the organization from the Division of Infectious Diseases at Glenbrook and Evanston Hospitals where he was the Chairman of Infection Control for five years and an Attending Physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Evanston Hospital for six years. Dr. Vescio graduated from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood in 1993. He received his BS in biology from Loyola University in 1989. Dr. Vescio is working towards his certification in palliative medicine.
