New Chief Financial Officer at Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter
Vicki E. Jenkins was recently appointed chief financial officer at Glenview’s Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter. Ms. Jenkins has served as vice president of information systems at CareCenter since 2005. She has more than 15 years experience in business planning, financial management and information and telecommunications management. Ms. Jenkins most recently served as chief information officer at Waukegan-based Yaskawa Electric America, Inc. Prior to that, she held other management positions at Yaskawa and served as plant controller and systems manager for Baxter International. She holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a B.S. from Northwestern University. Ms. Jenkins lives in Deerfield.

Chicago Medical Society Elects 2006-2007 Officers
Shastri Swaminathan, M.D. President Dr. Swaminathan joined the Society in 1990. His first leadership position was as councilor; he served later as secretary and as president of the North Side Branch. Since 2000 he has served two terms as vice chairman of the Council and one term as Chairman in addition to serving on the Board of Trustees. Over the years, Dr. Swaminathan has participated on the following CMS committees: Third Party Payment Processes, Advisory on Public Health Policy, PRO Study, Building, and Membership. He has chaired the Committee on International Medical Graduates and currently serves on the Budget and Midwest Clinical Conference Committees. A delegate to the ISMS House of Delegates, Dr. Swaminathan has served on its Council on Governmental Affairs and on the Council on Medical Services. He is currently on the ISMS Board of Trustees and a member of the IMPAC Board. Dr. Swaminathan is a past president of the Illinois Psychiatric Society and past president of the India Medical Association. He is currently a representative from the Illinois Psychiatric Society to the American Psychiatric Association’s Assembly. A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Swaminathan earned his medical degree at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and completed his residency at Northwestern University. He is on the faculty of the University of Illinois as a clinical associate professor, and is the medical director of inpatient psychiatric services at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. | Saroja Bharati, M.D. President-Elect Dr. Bharati has been a member since 1971, and a trustee since 2001. She just completed two terms as CMS secretary. Dr. Bharati currently serves as a councilor from the North Side Branch; she served previously as its secretary and as president. She also serves as a consultant to the Continuing Medical Education Committee and to the Subcommittee on Joint Sponsorship, having previously served as the subcommittee’s vice-chair. She has been chair of the Midwest Clinical Conference since 2003. In addition to her CMS activities, Dr. Bharati has served on the following ISMS committees: CME Activities, Medical Legal Council (chair), and Council on Education and Health Workforce (consultant). She served as the second vice president and as a delegate to the ISMS House of Delegates; she has served on its Reference Committee for the past several years. In other activities, Dr. Bharati was co-chair of the Ethics Committee of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology and is a past president of the American Medical Women’s Association, Chicago Branch. Dr. Bharati is director of the Maurice Lev Congenital Heart and Conduction System Center, The Heart Institute for Children, Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital, Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center. She is also professor of pathology at Rush University Medical Center, clinical professor of pathology at Rosalind Franklin University, and visiting professor of pathology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Bharati has published extensively, including a recent two-volume book titled Pathology of Congenital Heart Disease: A Personal Experience with More than 6,300 Congenitally Malformed Hearts. In 1999, Today’s Chicago Woman magazine honored Dr. Bharati as one of 100 women making a difference in Chicago. | Thomas M. Anderson, Jr., M.D. Treasurer Board-certified in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine, Dr. Anderson is a graduate of Harvard Medical School; he completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and fellowship in nuclear medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He holds subspecialty-certification in pediatric radiology (1996) and neuroradiology (1999). A CMS member since 1972, Dr. Anderson is the current chairman of the CMS Budget Committee; he serves also on the Building Committee and Investment Committee (former chair). Over the years, he has sat on multiple committees: as chairman of the Resolutions Reference Committee (2002-2003), consultant to the Bylaws Committee (2005-2006), consultant and chairman of the Credentials Committee, and consultant to the Election Committee. Additionally, he served on the Task Force on Professional Liability Insurance in 1997-1998. A member of the Board of Trustees since 2003, Dr. Anderson was its vice-chairman in 2005-2006. He is former councilor to the Chicago Radiological Society (1993-2005) and a current alternate delegate to ISMS. He has participated on the ISMS Continuing Education Committee and on its Council on Economics. At the local level, Dr. Anderson is a former alternate councilor of the Southeastern Branch and former Branch president (1991-1993). He has served as an oral board examiner in musculoskeletal imaging for the American Board of Radiology since 1994. A member of the Illinois Radiologic Society, Dr. Anderson has been a diagnostic radiology representative to the Medicare (Combined Medical Systems) Carrier Advisory Committee since 1996. He was chairman of the Department of Radiology at Mercy Hospital for 20 years, and is now working in private practice in privately owned outpatient imaging centers. | William N. Werner, M.D. Secretary Dr. Werner has been a member of the Council since 1994, a trustee since 2000, and most recently, CMS treasurer. Dr. Werner has served on several CMS committees including: Building and Investment Committee, PRO Study (chair), Third Party Payment Processes, Nominating, Continuing Medical Education, Technology (chair), Budget (chair) and the Midwest Clinical Conference (chair). He was course director for the MCC Computers and Technology sessions for several years. At the ISMS level, Dr. Werner has served on the Committee on CME Activities and the Committee on CME Accreditation, as well as the Council on Economics. He recently was elected to the ISMS Board of Trustees. He has been a member of the AMA's CPT Advisory Committee and served on former Governor Ryan's Task Force on Medical Errors and Patient Safety. He is on the Board of Directors of the Washington Square Health Foundation, Inc., and serves as chair of the Grant Committee. Dr. Werner is vice president of medical management and chief medical officer of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Dr. Werner earned his bachelor's degree from North Park College, Chicago, and both his medical and master’s of public health degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois. He is an assistant dean for the Chicago Medical School of Rosalind Franklin University. Dr. Werner has been a member of the hospital's medical staff since 1986 and has been in active private practice since 1976 on the near north side of Chicago. He previously was associate director of medical education at Henrotin Hospital and medical director of HCX, Inc., in Naperville. Dr. Werner is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is a member of the American Public Health Association and a Fellow of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago. He was president of the Chicago Society of Internal Medicine in 2001-2002. | William A. McDade, M.D. Chairman of the Council Dr. McDade, an active member in the Society since joining in 1981, has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2003. He is now beginning his second term as chairman of the CMS Council. Over the years, Dr. McDade has served as chairman of the following committees: Membership, Long-Range Planning, and Midwest Clinical Conference. He serves as a councilor from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. At ISMS, he has been chairman of the Governmental Affairs Council for the past six years and was recently elected to its board of trustees. At the AMA level, Dr. McDade served as chairman of the Minority Affairs Consortium and was the first recipient of the Recognition of Excellence in Eliminating Health Disparities Award. Dr. McDade is an alternate delegate to the AMA from the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He is also a past president of the Cook County Physicians Association and the Chicago Society of Anesthesiologists. He is current president of the Prairie State Medical Society of the National Medical Association. Dr. McDade completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and is currently associate professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago. He is also Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs at the Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. McDade earned both his doctoral and medical degrees at the University of Chicago. His research interest is focused on sickle cell disease and medical education. He is currently principal investigator for three grants that develop medical students from high school through medical school. | David A. Loiterman, M.D. Vice-Chairman of the Council Dr. Loiterman, a vascular surgeon in solo practice, has staff appointments at LaGrange Memorial and Hinsdale Hospitals. He previously served on LaGrange Hospital’s executive committee and as the vice-chairman of its department of surgery. Dr. Loiterman was also a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Loiterman joined CMS in 1986, shortly after completing a thoracic surgery fellowship at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. He earned his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, also in New York City, and he completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. At CMS he has served on numerous committees: Continuing Medical Education, Technology, Long-Range Planning, and Resolutions Reference. He is a past chairman of the Clinical Conference Committee, on which he still serves. A current delegate to ISMS and a former member of the ISMS Governmental Affairs Council, Dr. Loiterman previously served as councilor and president of the Douglas Park Branch of CMS and as trustee of the CMS Fifth District. Dr. Loiterman has published articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Journal of Vascular Surgery. He holds patents on the Guidance System for Vascular Catheter and the Vascular Access System for Extracorporeal Treatment of Blood. |

Provena Saint Joseph CEO Promoted to Regional President
Jeffrey Brickman, president and CEO of Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, has been promoted to regional President and CEO of the newly created Provena Southwest Suburban Region, Provena Health announced recently. The Provena Southwest Suburban Region will include Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center and Provena St. Mary’s Hospital under Brickman’s leadership. As part of the announcement, Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin and Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora will be joined to form the Northern Illinois Region under Bill Brown, Provena Saint Joseph Hospital’s current president and CEO.
