Noted Spine Surgeon Named New Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospital, Chicago

Shriners Hospitals for Children, Chicago welcomed Peter Sturm, M.D., as its new Chief of Staff. Dr. Sturm is nationally recognized for his expertise in the treatment of scoliosis and other spinal deformities, using both minimally invasive and traditional open surgical techniques.

Dr. Sturm comes to Shriners from the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital. He attended New York University Medical School and served both his internship and an orthopedic residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He was the Russell Boyce spine fellow at Ottawa Civic Hospital at the University of Ottawa and completed his second fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Children's Hospital in Boston.

Before his tenure at the University of Chicago, Dr. Sturm was Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, and an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Sturm is a member of the American Academy Orthopaedic Surgery, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA).

Joe G.N. Garcia Appointed Chairman of Medicine at the University of Chicago

Joe G. N. "Skip" Garcia, M.D., a leading authority on lung biology and disease, the genetics, prevention and treatment of pulmonary edema, and the molecular biology of blood vessels, has been appointed the Lowell T. Coggeshall Professor and chairman of the department of medicine.

Garcia comes to the University of Chicago from Johns Hopkins University where he was the David Marine Professor and director of pulmonary and critical care in the department of medicine. He was also a professor in the departments of biomedical engineering and environmental health sciences in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also directed the occupational lung center at Hopkins, as well as centers for basic and translational research in the department of medicine, and for translational respiratory medicine.

Garcia earned his B.S. in biology from the University of Dallas in 1976, and his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1980. He did his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and a fellowship in pulmonary diseases at Albany Medical College. He joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Center in 1985 and moved to the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1988, where he was named the Dr. Calvin H. English Professor of Medicine in 1995. He joined the Hopkins faculty in 1998.

Garcia has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and 25 book chapters. He serves on the editorial boards of six scientific journals, is co-editor in chief for the journal Microvascular Research, associate editor of the American Journal of Respiratory Cell & Molecular Biology and the Journal of Stem Cell Research, and was managing editor-in-chief for Current Opinion in European Medicine, 2002-2004. He is a past president of the Central Society for Clinical Research, a member of the board of directors for the American Thoracic Society and a member or chairman of several NIH committees.

He has received many awards including the American Thoracic Society Distinguished Scientist Award, the Henry F. Christian Award for Meritorious Research from the American Federation of Medical Research, the Otis R. Bowen Award for Community Service from the Indianapolis Medical Society, and the David M. Levine Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Hopkins Department of Medicine. Garcia, who is fluent in Spanish, has also been a student advocate and an active supporter of minority medical and science students. He nurtured more than 20 under-represented minority students at Hopkins, guiding then into M.D. and Ph.D. programs and received NIH funding to train minorities.

St. Alexius Medical Center Doctor Named "Family Physician of the Year"

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP) has named Dr. Calvin H. Fischer as its 2005 Family Physician of the Year. The award was presented to Dr. Fischer during a special luncheon award ceremony held recently at Stonegate Banquet and Conference Centre in Hoffman Estates.

Dr. Fischer moved to the northwest suburbs in 1980 and joined the medical staff of St. Alexius Medical Center (then Humana Hospital). During his 25 years of service he has held a variety of leadership positions, including nine years as the president of the hospital's medical-dental staff. Dr. Fischer founded the hospital's Physicians' Bible Study Group in 1995, and has been the chairman of the department of family practice since 2000.

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians received numerous letters of support for Dr. Fischer, including many from his patients and their families. "Dr. Fischer routinely receives high praise and positive comments from the patients he serves, employees of the hospital, and his peers on the medical staff," said Edward M. Goldberg, president of St. Alexius Medical Center.

Dr. Fisher has been named as "One of the Top Primary Care Physicians in America" by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. for four consecutive years. He's also received the American Medical Association's "Physicians' Recognition Award" ten times since 1977.
